Faux is a French word for “false” or “imitation.“ When manufacturing materials such as faux stone, the attempt is usually made to create products that will resemble the original actual items as closely as possible. To imitate stones, “faux finishes” can be painted, sponged or feather-streaked on painted surfaces.
Newsday has an excellent article, “Applying faux-stone veneers” that explains the products and how to apply them for the do-it-yourselfer. It explains that faux stone products are usually made with molds of natural stone and that it is hard to distinguish the imitation from the real thing.
It is easy to update your home’s interior or exterior using faux stone, and there are many projects that can be tackled to increase the value and enjoyment of your property.
1. Use on walls to make them more attractive
Choose a composite stone veneer for interior and exterior designing that is lightweight and composed of recycled plastic that has the look and feel of real stone. No preparation of a wall is necessary if the wall is in good condition and made of sheetrock or another material that does not buckle and flex. Stones are secured with a special adhesive and can be cut with a hacksaw. The manufacturer will provide detailed instructions.
2. Perfect for fireplaces
Be sure to use a stone veneer product that is nonflammable and has a “Class A” fire rating so that the material is safe to use around the typical fireplace. With any project, carefully measure the entire area in square feet and purchase the amount of stone needed all at the same time, making sure that every package has the same lot number. Different batches can vary in color and tone and will show up.
3. Hang shelves and mirrors for decoration
There are so many beautiful shelves and unique mirrors that can beautify an area. However, be sure not to use a hammer and nail to make any necessary holes because it could crack the stone. You have to drill screw holes for fasteners instead.
4. Make good use of the natural beauty of river stone
The texture, details, and coloring of river rock and stone styles may look and even feel like the real thing, but they are composed of polyurethane, which is a durable material that is even tougher than actual stone. It has major benefits because it stays looking fresh and new for years and can withstand harsh climate conditions such as wind, cold, heat, sunlight and moisture without peeling, fading, eroding or chipping.
5. Faux stone adds visual appeal to any decor
Whether your décor is modern, traditional, casual or formal, faux stone panels add much to the adornment of your kitchen, den, living room, dining room, bedroom, bathroom, home bar, patio, pool area, garden, porch, garage, mailbox or wherever you’d like to make use of their appealing features as finishing touches. They are also beneficial by being lightweight and able to be installed usually by the homeowner without a mason and being cost-effective.
