5 Signs It is Time to Talk To Your Parents About Assisted Living

One of the hardest decisions adult children have to make regarding their elderly parents is the type of care they want them to receive as their health begins to decline. Understanding the most common signs to watch for to determine when to talk to your parents about assisted living is a way to keep your mind at ease while ensuring a safe and healthy future for your entire family.

Changes in Daily Routines and Habits

When your parents begin changing their daily routines and habits that are extremely unlike them or beneficial to their day, it is important to take note. Keep an eye on how your parents go about their day and whether or not they are capable of setting goals and sticking to tasks they have at hand.

Noticeable Cognitive Differences

Cognitive differences, changes, and depletions are the most common reasons that adult children choose to place their parents in assisted living facilities. When your parent is no longer able to remember you, follow directions or complete basic everyday tasks, they are likely in need of much more assistance to help them stick to a routine and healthy schedule.

Lack of Hygiene

Take notice of your parent’s hygiene habits and whether they have noticeably shifted their hygiene schedule. If, when you were growing up, your parent was extremely adamant about showering and maintaining perfect hygiene and they are no longer interested in it, it may be time for a discussion or time to look into alternative care facilities. It is also imperative to keep in mind that hygiene changes are often also common signs of anxiety and depression, which should be addressed with your parent before choosing an assisted living facility that is right for them.

Mobility Limitations

When your parent is unable to¬†move around the house or travel¬†outside without assistance from others it can feel daunting and overwhelming leaving them to tend to themselves without anyone else around. If your parent’s mobility limitations are increasing with each year, seek out an assisted living facility that is well-equipped to help care for all of your parent’s physical and emotional needs on a daily basis.

Inability to Provide Care Yourself

While some adult children resort to caring for their aging and elderly parents as they become incapable of doing so themselves, it is not always possible for everyone, especially those with busy or hectic schedules. Whether you have a family and a full-time career or if you are simply located too far from your parents, it may be time to think about talking to your parents about assisted living if you are unable to help care for them on a regular basis yourself.

Many adult children feel extremely guilty regarding their inability to care for and assist their aging parents 24/7, however, this is not possible for most individuals who also need to make a living.

Having the ability to remain self-aware of your parents’ actions and potential inabilities allow you to take complete control over the direction of their future without leaving them behind. When you know what signs to look for it is much easier to begin the process of transitioning your parents from living at home to a fully assisted living center.
