4 Advantages of Bacteriostatic Water

Bacteriostatic water is a form of water that’s designed to prevent the growth and development of certain types of bacteria. To accomplish this, water is usually sterilized and then filtered to eliminate the present bacteria. The water is then mixed with 0.9% benzyl alcohol to prevent future contamination or the growth of bacteria. The benzyl alcohol is what makes the water bacteriostatic and this means that the bacteria content doesn’t change. But, what are the benefits of bacteriostatic water? Read on to know more.

  • To dilute or dissolve medications

If a physician needs to dilute or dissolve medications for a patient’s injection, bacteriostatic water can be utilized. It can be used on all the three methods of injections namely intravenous, intramuscular and subcutaneous. With intravenous, an injection is administered by accessing the veins while in the intramuscular injection the needle is used to access the muscle. An injection is performed under the patient’s skin in the subcutaneous method. Each method can be employed – it all depends on the kind of treatment and how effective it will be based on the medical practitioner’s prescription.

  • Can be stored for long

Unlike plain saline water, you can store bacteriostatic water for a long time. But, if the water isn’t used for over 28 days, it needs to be discarded. This is the manufacturer’s recommendation. Once the 28 days lapse, the benzyl alcohol loses its effect of hindering bacteria growth. In some cases, salt may be used to prevent the growth of bacteria instead of benzyl alcohol. The reason often depends on the use.

  • It’s cheap, readily available and easy to manufacture

Bacteriostatic water is not expensive to manufacture and that’s one of the reasons it’s readily available. It can even be manufactured from home as long as you have all the requirements and understand the right procedure. You will require benzyl alcohol and sterile water. Using tap water isn’t advised because it can make bacteriostatic water dangerous; you aren’t sure of the quality of water the council supplies.

  • It is reusable

Usually, you need to use a needle to pierce through the rubber seal that acts as a lid when you want to draw water out. This needle may introduce bacteria into the water. But, you need not worry about that if you are using bacteriostatic water, compared to other types of water. The benzyl alcohol will help prevent the growth of various kinds of bacteria than other anti-bacterial agents. Due to this, you can comfortably use bacteriostatic water different times in medication.

Bacteriostatic water provides many benefits than other forms of water designed to perform the similar function. Benzyl alcohol is responsible for all these benefits including cost-effectiveness and prevention of bacterial contamination and growth.
