6 Facts Everyone Should Know About Parking and ADA Compliance

The American Disabilities Act has made it possible for people all over the U.S. with disabilities to be protected in a wide variety of different ways. One of the most beneficial involves the requirements and laws that impact parking. So, it is very important that people in businesses and various organizations understand these requirements in order to remain in compliance with the law.

To make sure that you that you know what these laws are today, and they impact what you are responsible for, here are 6 facts everyone should know about parking and ADA compliance.

1. Minimum Parking Space Requirements
When you or someone in your organization is designing your parking lot for a new facility, it is important that you do your research. In order for your parking lot to be in compliance with the American Disabilities Act and their requirements, the number of parking spaces must be available for those who have certain medical conditions. For instance, it is important to note that the total number of disability parking spaces is not dependent on the number of spots available. Instead, it is based on other factors, one of which involves making allowance for at least one van in the assigned parking spaces.

2. Location

The owner of the facility will also need to take into account the location of each of these parking spaces. The location based on ADA requirement is stated as the shortest route that is accessible to the individual, from the parking lot to the entrance of the facility. These spaces must also be located on level ground and never on a curb or stairs.

3. Features of Accessible Parking Spaces Makes a Big Difference
When the owner and their representatives are designing the parking lot for ADA compliance, they are also looking at the type of features that will be required. For instance, the parking spaces must be within certain parameters to be accurate. Typically, the 60-inch Minimum Width Access Aisle for Cars is usually what is being required.

4. Resources
If you are not familiar with the laws that affect ADA, you will need to make sure that you are aware of what is required of you and the facilities that you use on a regular basis. To make sure that the information that you need is clear and available, you can visit sites that discuss and relay information about these laws and how to handle situations when questions arise. Having said this, here is some information on how to get the resources needed.

Sometimes the owner may not see the importance of making sure that the guidelines are closely followed. That is until the organization has received a violation for such. Based on this law, people are subject to fines when they are not making the appropriate parking accommodations for those with illnesses or disabilities that need it.

6. Conditions Addressed Under the Law
